The headline
Works on the Nyabisindu and Nyagatovu rehousing project in Gasabo District had reached 41% by 1 October 2026, the developers said. The project, in Nyabisindu Cell of Remera Sector and Nyagatovu Cell of Kimironko Sector, is due to be completed by May 2027.
The details
- Homes: 2,029 units replacing informal settlements, for vulnerable families.
- Buildings: 58 blocks of four levels each (ground plus three floors) on more than 38 hectares, with a school, a market, a football pitch, green space and roads.
- Cost: Rwf62.9 billion for design and construction, according to the Ministry of Infrastructure.
- Who builds: the Reserve Force, which also built the Mpazi rehousing project, with about 2,100 workers and mostly local materials.
- Displaced households: more than Rwf616 million supports temporary accommodation until June 2027, with Rwf309.6 million earmarked for 2026/27.
The project was launched in May 2025 and is run by the Ministry of Infrastructure, the Rwanda Housing Authority and the City of Kigali.
What it means for property
Rehousing on site, in taller blocks, is how Kigali is trying to replace informal settlements without moving people far away, and it frees land: in Nyabisindu, residents who occupied 32 hectares are being rehoused on eight (our story on rent-to-own).
